According to the sources close to GIgaOm, Google is to announce the launch of new cloud services platform this week on their annual developer conference I/O in San Francisco. This means that Amazon’s Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2) and Microsoft Windows Azure might get a serious competitor.
Google has already taken its cloud share by launching a cloud storage service Google Drive earlier this year. Google Apps Engine, a platform for developing and hosting web applications, is also a form of cloud service. As Google Docs are a SaaS and GAE is a PaaS, the only thing Google missed from their cloud range was IaaS.
By launching a complete IaaS Google will complete their list of cloud services and enter a more enterprise-focused cloud space. They are going to offer a practical platform with a lot of features that facilitate application development. Google’s major aim will be to attract developers, so it could compete with Microsoft that has a great enterprise developer base. It is rumored that Rightscale and Opscode have already accepted a partnership with Google.
Google didn’t confirm any of the information, but the conference will take place from June 27th to June 29th and this is when we should expect further news.
