Earlier this month we summarized most important security breaches in Dropbox where we mentioned their intentions to enhance security features. This decision came after the most recent breech that happened about a month ago, when user passwords were obtained from third-party websites and then used for accessing user accounts. The trust in the security of this cloud storage service was fragile even before this, so it was about time to make some improvements.
As announced on official Dropbox forum, the new feature comes in the form of two-step verification. From now on, Dropbox users have the opportunity to add code verification as an additional security layer to their accounts. The first layer is password that the users are asked to enter when accessing their accounts and now they can enable sending a code via SMS or mobile authenticator app.
To activate this feature you should sign in to the website and choose ‘Security’ tab from the ‘Settings’ menu. Under the Account Sign-in section, there is an option to set two-step verification option that is ‘disabled’ by default. After you click the “change” link you’ll be given an option to choose to receive security code by text message or to use mobile app.
Two-step verification methods are often used to secure online payments, for example, while Google and Facebook also provide similar services for their users. The service sends you a code to your mobile device and you are asked to type it into your browser when logging in to your account. These systems are supposed to prevent any potentially dangerous intrusion to your account from unrecognized devices and are generally considered quite safe.
The newly introduced feature is optional but Dropbox team highly recommends it. Considering the fact that Dropbox has had so many security breaches already, it would probably be wise to enable it. Besides two step verification, Dropbox announced that they created an option to view active logins and that they are working on automated mechanisms that are supposed to identify suspicious activities.
Dropbox is a leader among cloud-storage and online backup services as far as individual users are concerned. The improvements they just announced may help them maintain this position, especially as the whole cloud storage story gets more and more popular. Security is an important issue in online world and it is always a good step to pay more attention to it.
