Cloud based gaming or a gaming on demand is a relatively new form of online gaming experience. It refers to a gaming application delivered by cloud providers via the Internet. The game is stored on a remote server and is delivered to a local computer through a thin client. The greatest advantage of cloud based gaming is that it is not necessary for a local device to have all the supporting hardware elements – all it takes is a decent (or half-decent) Internet connection.
The first impact of cloud based gaming was back in 2005 when G-cluster launched the first commercial cloud gaming solution. However, it was not until OnLive launched its cloud gaming platform in 2009 that it became so widely used. Soon followed the launch of Gaikai and this brought a global popularity to cloud gaming services. As it was no longer necessary to download software and worry about hardware requirements in order to have an access to a high resolution video game, there came the time to say goodbye to hard copies of video games.
Cloud computing has become dominant in all the aspects of our lives. It allows users to access their documents and apps from anywhere and at any time. In the world where the average person uses at least three of four different devices regularly, this is a highly practical solution. With all these devices it is difficult to keep track of where the documents are saved, which is also the case with video games – imagine you had to install a game to every single device you’re using.
The interactive environment where a player can interact with different objects during the game is one of the things that made online gaming so popular. With cloud based games it is possible to chat freely with a player from another side of the planet and this makes the whole game much more challenging. The fact that even the users with low-power computer can enjoy full graphics contributed a lot to spreading the idea of cloud gaming.
The gaming platforms are being constantly improved. OnLive games are now integrated into VIZIO HDTVs, Tablets, Smart Phones and Blu-ray Players in the VIA Plus™ Ecosystem. Furthermore, Samsung recently announced that they’ll be launching cloud gaming service on its LED and Plasma TVs. Enthusiastic players would now be able to access their favorite games anywhere from almost any kind of device.
Clearly, the underlying issue about this shift towards cloud gaming is the destiny of traditional hard copy games which still rely on a physical distribution. The companies that are making hardware elements and consoles are also threatened as most of the users don’t find them necessary any more.
With cloud computing we see many traditional technologies becoming obsolete. The advances in this field adapt to the necessities of modern life, causing a massive downfall of the companies that were unable to satisfy the most prominent market requirements. When thinking about the future it is not difficult to predict where this world is headed to and that cloud computing will surely be its integral part.
